IBS-C and IBS-D now may have a name

84% of all people with IBS have SIBO according to Dr Henry Lin's work. I've had IBS symptoms off and on my whole life but it wasn't until 2 years ago, in 2022, after a period of very high stress that things became unbearable. In one month I gained 17lbs and I hadn't changed the way I was eating or my exercise amounts or anything. I became very constipated and any time I ate, I grew a "food baby". I started burping a lot, had some acid reflux start, had a very gurgly stomach, and was in pain A LOT.
As I researched it I realized I might have SIBO which is a small intestinal bacterial overgrowth- the bacteria that are supposed to be in the large intestine end up growing in the small intestine and it can cause all the symptoms I had acquired. I found a place where I could order a breath test to confirm my suspicions and sure enough, it came back positive. There were many pieces to put together and many things to try to see how my body would respond to different treatments. I was basically learning on myself as I was guided by the experts- Dr Siebecker and Dr Jacobi- shout out to their amazing SIBO courses as well as the work of Dr Janel as highlighted in this article and microbiologist Kiran Krishnan's work in this article.
Now two years later, two speciality SIBO courses later, and using Microbiome Labs life-changing probiotics, I have healed my gut and am symptom free.
I have learned through my process that the gut microbiome is the foundation for health and that the more empowered I became with the right knowledge about gut health, the healthier I have become.

What is SIBO?

SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) is an imbalance of the microorganisms in your gut that maintain healthy digestion. When too many bacteria, or the wrong kind, populate your small intestine, it can lead to uncomfortable symptoms like gas and diarrhea. It can also inhibit your ability to digest and absorb nutrients from food.

Symptoms of SIBO

  • Acid Reflux
  • Burping
  • Nausea
  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Alternating diarrhea with constipation
  • Unexplained weight loss or weight gain

Other Effects of SIBO

SIBO can also cause other body-wide issues because it damages your nutrient-processing part of your intestines and affects how your body absorbs nutrients like Vitamin B12, iron and other fat-soluble vitamins. SIBO can also affect how fat is broken down in your food which can lead to fatty stools or even how estrogen is processed in your body which can lead to a build up of estrogen.
It will also lead to leaky gut which can cause food sensitivities, headaches, body pain, fatigue, rashes/eczema, depression, anxiety, asthma, and many other things/diseases linked to inflammation like diabetes, fatty liver, etc. Leaky gut is also the main reason that people get any auto-immune condition according to Dr Fassano (celiac researcher).

Treatment for SIBO

If any of this sounds familiar, you don't have to live with all these symptoms or have a progression into disease- SIBO can be treated!
